Finally all the delegates presented their postulations at the “General Assembly”, where discussions went on until all delegates could vote for their favorites.
Today discussions in all committees went on and the students had the honor to have a talk to experts, who know much about the different aspects of climate change. Interview with Ingrid Felipe, the second deputy governor of Tyrol:Interviewer: As you were also politically active during your school days, what do you think of projects like YPAC?
Felipe: It is a great opportunity for interested students. You will forget most things learned at school, because they are stored somewhere in your head and you will not need all of them in your future. But in projects like these people develop awareness for political roles and the differences within the countries and these are the things, which stay in your head for ever. I: Looking at the climate protests all over Europe, one can feel that the political air among young people has changed. How did you experience this development? F: The whole movement shows that climate protection concerns every single person. And we need everyone to work together but, and that is very important, politics and economy have to set basic regulations to support people living a sustainable life. People not using the car are in need of a good public transport and save cycle tracks otherwise this cannot work. I: Pressure from the people is there. But will there be any reaction from politicians? F: Yes, definitely! Everyone talks about it right now and even if politicians do not like this movement they have to deal with it. Especially in Austria, where people can vote at the age of 16, politicians are aware of the fact that the young people protesting on the street are also the people going to the elections. I: Thinking of climate protection and sustainability, are there some points you can name which Innsbruck is really doing well and some which need to be improved? F: Public transport is one of the things Innsbruck is doing well. Innsbruck is quite small but has a comparable transport system to cities like Vienna. Additionally, we have a really good energy development plan which means that we are working on rebuilding and insulating houses. What needs to be improved is our cycling track system. But especially in the city, there is a lot of potential and we are working really hard to improve that. How to cope with climate change - This is the issue of this year's YPAC where students from several countries come together and try to find solutions for it. Here are some impressions from the first day: |
